How Cambridge O Level exams work

Last checked: 6 November 2026

Our O Level teaching follows the published Cambridge O Level syllabus for each subject. Because Quadranza Academy is not a Cambridge registered school or exam centre, Cambridge exams are taken separately from the school, as a private candidate at an exam centre that accepts them. Whether O Level is open to private candidates, and at what age, depends on the country and the centre, and in some countries it may not be available. This guide explains what that means and what we have confirmed.

What is a private candidate? A private candidate registers for Cambridge exams directly with an exam centre, rather than through their own school. In Pakistan, the British Council registers private candidates for Cambridge O Level. In the Gulf, the British Council accepts Cambridge private candidates in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and lists Oman in its private-candidate network (confirmed from official sources, checked November 2026).

Who registers and pays? The family registers with the exam centre and pays the exam centre's fees.

When are exams held? Cambridge exams are held in exam series, usually in May and June and in October and November. Each exam centre sets its own registration window and deadlines, and late registration usually costs more. For example, normal registration for October/November 2026 at the British Council in Qatar ran from 13 July to 10 August, with a late stage to 14 September (confirmed from an official source, checked 2 November 2026).

Do the rules differ by country? Yes, sometimes significantly. Some exam centres offer a narrower range of qualifications, some require extra documents, and some require ministry permission for candidates under 18. Check with the exam centre in the country where your child will sit exams before you enrol.

Requirements we have found

  • Pakistan. The British Council registers private candidates online for Cambridge O Level, with exams in May/June and October/November. Not every subject is open to private candidates; the British Council lists the subjects on its registration system. Confirmed from an official source (British Council Pakistan, checked 6 November 2026).
  • Qatar. The British Council states that candidates must be 18 or over, and that younger candidates need permission from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education; no application is processed without it. Confirmed from an official source (British Council Qatar, checked 2 November 2026).
  • UAE. The British Council's Cambridge flyer requires an NOC letter for IGCSE and A Level entries, without saying who issues it, and states that certificates for private candidates are not endorsed by the UAE ministry. Confirmed from an official source (British Council UAE, checked 2 November 2026).

What about practical and spoken components? Some subjects include practical, oral or coursework components that private candidates may not be able to take, or may take in an alternative form. Check each subject with your exam centre before registering.

What happens if exams are disrupted? Exams are occasionally cancelled or changed. News reports said that Cambridge cancelled its June 2026 exams in the UAE, and that Cambridge schools there followed an alternative route agreed with the UAE Ministry of Education (reported, not confirmed: Gulf News, Khaleej Times). How private candidates were affected has not been confirmed. Arrangements in such cases are set by Cambridge, exam centres and ministries, not by Quadranza Academy. We aim to share what we learn with enrolled families.

How we help. We teach to the syllabus and prepare students for the format of each paper.

O Level and IGCSE explained

Cambridge O Level and Cambridge IGCSE are both international qualifications from Cambridge, usually taken at around age 16 after two years of study. Families often ask how they compare, and which one matters for their child's next step.

Which does Quadranza Academy teach? Our O Level teaching follows the published Cambridge O Level syllabus for each subject. We do not offer IGCSE at present.

Which is right for my child? It depends on where your child plans to study next, which exams are open to private candidates in your country, and the subjects they need. Subject lists also differ by centre: for example, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies do not appear on the British Council Qatar October/November 2026 price list (confirmed from an official source, checked 2 November 2026). Check the entry requirements of the schools or universities your child may apply to, and the rules where you live for exam access.
